Digital / Mock-ups / Exhibition Proposal / "90's TV and Music

Challenge: To record a cultural connection between the American home and the popular television programming and music of the late 1990's. Strategy: To create a graphic, digital-age-themed presentation of cultural content. To enter the space between simulation and presentation, engaging the viewer with large projections layered over household electronics. To structure the exhibition around a set timeline, using vinyl printouts of album artwork to form a sequence of years. To present something personal as a statement of fact.

But the goal of this exhibition goes farther than just extolling the era. the design of this space is meant to both present and condense the connection between television, music and the domestic environment that existed during the late 1990's."

Interior windows #6 and #7. "The visual brand of the exhibition is derived from the interesting position the nineties holds in the information era. Children who grew up during the late nineties were the first generation to know what it was like to grow up fluent in technology, and the last generation to know what it was like to grow up without it. The new abundance of technology in the home turned the domestic environment into the main arena for the consumption of music and video. This shift gives additional value to the music and video that was being consumed when music and video first found their place in the home and (consequently) younger children first gained access to them."

The viewer is engaged with the visual, auditory, and tactile sensations of dated television programming and album art of the most popular songs from 1995-1999. The expected results are a replicated late 90's experience alongside a presentation of that experience. For those who grew up during this time period, it will be like going back in time. For those who did not, it will be an informative/culturally submerging experience based on an objectively precious connection between pop culture and the home."
